Biography of Stephen Crane:

1871 – Stephen Crane was born this year in Newark, New Jersey, the 14th child of a Methodist minister. Crane studied at Lafayette College and Syracuse University, from neither of which did Stephen Crane attain degrees; Stephen Crane was asked to leave both universities.

 1887 – Stephen Crane was assisting his brother Townley in writing articles about the New Jersey shore for local papers and the New York Tribune.  1890 – After his mother’s death, Stephen Crane moved to New York City, where Stephen Crane lived a bohemian life working as a free-lance writer and journalist.

 1893 – His first novel was Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which was a milestone in the development of literary naturalism.  1895 - "Maggie" was followed by The Red Badge of Courage (1895), a powerful tale of the American Civil War.
