Biography of William Caslon:

1692 - Born in Cradley, Worcestershire, England. English typefounder.

1716 - Caslon began his career as an apprentice to an engraver of gunlocks and barrels.          - Started business in London as an engraver of gun locks and barrels, and as a bookbinder's tool-cutter.

1720-1726 - William Caslon designed the typeface that bears his name. His work helped to modernize the book, making it a separate creation rather than a printed imitation of the old hand-produced book.

1740 - His typefaces were used for most important printed works. One such example is the first printed version of the United States Declaration of Independence.

1766 - Died on January 23rd in Bethnal Green, London.          - His business was carried on by his eldest son, William.
