1856 - Lyman Abbott studied law and was admitted to the bar. 1860 - Lyman Abbott was ordained a minister of the Congregational Church, after studying theology with his uncle.

         - Lyman Abbott was pastor of the Congregational Church in Terre Haute, Indiana for five years. 1865 - Lyman Abbott became the pastor of the New England Church in New York City.

       - Lyman Abbott was secretary of the American Union Commission (later called the American Freedmen's Bureau). 1869 - Lyman Abbott resigned as a pastor to devote himself to literature.

        - Lyman Abbott was an associate editor of Harper's Magazine, and editor of the Illustrated Christian Weekly.
