1849 - Johannes Henricus Brand was called to the English bar from the Inner Temple. 1849-1863 - Practised as an advocate in the supreme court of the Cape of Good Hope.
1858 - Johannes Henricus Brand was appointed professor of law in the South African College. 1863 - Because of his support for their republican ideals, Johannes Henricus Brand emigrated to the Orange Free State and was elected president of the Orange Free State.
1864 - Johannes Henricus Brand resisted the pressure of the Basuto on the Free State boundary, and after vainly endeavouring to induce Moshesh, the Basuto chief, to keep his people within bounds.
