British adventurer, journalist, and explorer of Africa immigrated to US 1859 (naturalized US citizen 1885 renaturalized British subject 1892) served in Confederate navy 1861-1862 and Union army 1864-1865 in US Civil War commissioned 1869 by James Gordon Bennett (1841-1918) of The New York Herald to track down David Livingstone in Africa found David Livingstone 1871, greeting him with celebrated remark "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" explored Congo region 1879-1884 in service of Belgium wrote "How I Found Livingstone" 1872, 2-volume "Through the Dark Continent" 1878, 2-volume "The Congo and the Founding of its Free State" 1885, 2-volume "In Darkest Africa" 1890, 2-volume "My Early Travels and Adventures in America and Asia" 1895.
