Biography of Marcus Whitman:

1802 – Marcus Whitman was born this year in the Oregon Country. Marcus Whitman is famous for leading the first large party of wagon trains along the Oregon Trail.

 1834 – Marcus Whitman applied to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.  1835 – Marcus Whitman traveled with missionary Samuel Parker to present-day north-western Montana and northern Idaho, to minister to the Native American bands of the Flathead and Nez Percé people.

 1836 – He, and a group of other missionaries including Henry H. Spalding, joined a caravan of fur traders and traveled west, establishing several missions as well as their own settlement.

 1843 – Marcus Whitman traveled east, and on his return Marcus Whitman helped lead the first large group of wagon trains west from Fort Hall, in eastern Idaho.
