1913 - Blandy graduated first in his class from the United States Naval Academy. 1914 - William Henry Purnell Blandy participated in the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico and served on board the battleship Florida (BB-30) with the British Grand Fleet during World War I.
1941-1943 - During World War II William Henry Purnell Blandy was Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance; then Commander, Group 1, Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet. After the war William Henry Purnell Blandy commanded Joint Task Force 1 during the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll.
1947-1950 - William Henry Purnell Blandy commanded the 2nd Task Fleet and later served as Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet.
