Biography of Harriet Tubman:

1820 - Harriet Ross was born in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet Tubman was of purely African ancestry and was born into slavery.

Harriet Tubman was raised under harsh conditions, and subjected to whippings even as a small child. 1832 - Harriet Tubman attempted to save a fellow slave from punishment but was struck in the head with a two-pound iron weight.

1850 - The Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act which made it illegal to help a runaway slave. It was during this time that Tubman decided to join the Underground Railroad.

1851 - Her first expedition began and Harriet Tubman managed to thread her way through the backwoods to Baltimore and return to the North with her sister and her sister's children. Harriet Tubman traveled to the South about 18 times and helped close to 300 slaves escape, until the onset of the Civil War.
