1941 - Alfred Birney Birney wrote poem "David". 1942 - Beginning with 'David and Other Poems', Birney's poetry consistently explored the resources of language with passionate and playful curiosity.

         - Won the Governor General's Award for Literature for "David and Other Poems". 1945 - Alfred Birney Birney won the Governor General's Award for Literature for "Now Is Time".

1946 - Alfred Birney Birney taught English at the University of British Columbia and held a number of teaching and editorial positions thereafter.
