Biography of Jean Rey:

1902 - Born in Liège on the 15th of July. 1926 - Jean Rey studied law at the University of Liège, where Jean Rey obtained a PhD.

1935 - Jean Rey joined the Liberal party and was elected city councillor of Liège. 1939 - Jean Rey won a seat in the Chamber of Representatives.

1940 - Mobilized as reserve officer, Jean Rey was captured by the Germans and spent the rest of the war in captivity. 1947 - Jean Rey promoted a bill on the organization of a federal state.

1949-1950 - Rey was Minister of Reconstruction. 1954 - Minister of Economy.

1958 - Member of the Commission of the CEE, responsible for external relations. 1964 - Jean Rey played an important role in the negotiations of the Kennedy Round.

1967 - Jean Rey succeeded Walter Hallstein as President of the European Commission.
