Biography of Barack Obama:

Obama attended Columbia University, but found New York's racial tension inescapable. Barack Obama became a community organizer for a small Chicago church-based group for three years, helping poor South Side residents cope with a wave of plant closings.

Barack Obama then attended Harvard Law School, and in 1990 became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, Obama worked as a community organizer, served as a law school professor, and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.

Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U. S.

House of Representatives in 2000, Barack Obama announced his campaign for the U. S.

Senate in January 2003.
